Artist’s Statement

I am an NYC-based multimedia artist working with textiles, ceramics, photography, and 2D materials. My work varies from small-scale embroidery on various surfaces to large-scale work that incorporates my diverse textile artworks, paintings, drawings, prints, and video. I approach working in textiles by focusing on my own personal experiences and their relationship to my mental health history. Beginning in March of 2020, the isolation of quarantine due to the pandemic took a larger toll on my body and mind than I could have ever expected. However, anxiety has always been a part of my life. Throughout the past year, I have been paying special attention to the way it affects my work, writing, thinking process, and everyday life. My works explore coping mechanisms and my own thought process when thinking about mental health through material explorations. I identify the different processes in which the work is therapeutic in itself. Through various medium investigations, I think about and work with my own memories and the overall feeling of nostalgia. The complex relationships we have between family, friends, culture, gender, and identity inform my practice. I ask: How does analyzing your personal past help navigate the inner self conflicts of the present? How do crafty practices become meditative ones? How might these investigations into coping and meditative practices help inform the care we give to our mind and body alike?
